Eyelid surgery

General information

What is Eyelid Surgery or Blepharoplasty?

Oculoplastics is a subspecialty of ophthalmology that focuses on the surgical and non-surgical treatment of the structures around the eye: the eyelids, the lacrimal system, the orbit (eye socket), and the adjacent face.

Eyelid surgery aims not only to improve aesthetic appearance (cosmetic surgery) but also to restore the function and health of the eyelids, ensuring proper eye protection and clear vision.

Types of Eyelid Procedures

Our treatments combine medical precision with natural aesthetic results, addressing a variety of functional and cosmetic conditions:

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery for Redundant Skin or Bags)

Description: This is the most common procedure. It is used to remove excess skin and/or fat from the upper and lower eyelids.

Objective: To improve vision that may be obstructed by excess skin of the upper eyelid (functional improvement) and/or correct the appearance of bags and tired eyelids (aesthetic improvement).

Ptosis Correction (Functional Drooping Eyelid)

Description: Procedure to correct the drooping of the upper eyelid margin, which may or may not cover the pupil, thus affecting vision.

Objective: To lift the eyelid to its normal position, restoring visual function and symmetry.

Correction of Other Eyelid Malpositions

Entropion: The eyelid folds inward, causing the eyelashes to rub against and damage the cornea.

Ectropion: The eyelid folds outward, exposing the conjunctiva and causing dryness and irritation.

Objective: To correct the eyelid position surgically to protect the ocular surface and relieve irritation.

Treatment of Eyelid Tumors

Description: Removal of lesions and tumors (benign or malignant) located on the eyelid, followed by careful reconstruction to preserve function and aesthetic appearance.

Objective: To completely eliminate the lesion and reconstruct the eyelid defect.

Who is a good candidate?

Anyone experiencing functional problems (obstructed vision, chronic eye irritation, dryness, excessive tearing) or who simply wishes to improve the aesthetic appearance of their eyelids may be a candidate.

A comprehensive oculoplastic evaluation by our specialist will determine the exact cause of your problem and whether you are a good candidate, always focusing on preserving eye health.

What to expect during the process?

Preoperative evaluation: Your surgeon will measure the laxity of your eyelids, tear production, and the overall condition of your eyes to plan the surgery with the utmost precision.

During surgery: Most eyelid procedures are outpatient procedures (do not require hospitalization) and are performed under local anesthesia with sedation.

Recovery: It is normal to experience swelling and bruising (ecchymosis) around the eyes, which peak within 48 hours and gradually subside over 1 to 2 weeks. Most people can resume light activities within a few days.

FAQs

Will blepharoplasty improve my vision?

Yes, it could if excess skin on the upper eyelid (Dermatochalasis) is obstructing part of the vision.

The results of eyelid surgery are very long-lasting. While the natural aging process continues, it is rare for patients to require a repeat procedure in the short term.

The incisions are made strategically in the natural creases of the eyelid. They are extremely fine and usually become virtually imperceptible over time.
